WATER CHEMISTRY BASICS
CHLORINE is only for sanitizing pools or spas. It is absolutely necessary that you have a sanitizer in the water at all times.
SHOCK is used to remove the by-products that are left by the chemicals and/or the bathers.
ALGAECIDES are only for keeping algae under control
With the quality of chemicals used by professional pool supply stores the NORMAL dosage rates are as follows:

KEEP CHLORINE IN THE POOL AT ALL TIMES
•
SHOCK EVERY OTHER WEEK
•
TREAT WITH AN ALGAECIDE EVERY OTHER WEEK
•
EVERYTHING IN YOUR POOL REACTS BEST AT A pH OF 7.4 - 7.6 MAINTAIN THAT LEVEL 



ALWAYS
In most cases the shock and the algaecide may be added the same day at least one hour apart
START UP
After testing pool water - not tap water

Balance pH

a.
adjust total alkalinity as needed ( 80 to 120 ppm )
2.
adjust calcium hardness ( 200 to 250 ppm )
3.
add stabilizer ( conditioner 30 to 40 ppm )
4.
add scale & iron inhibitor ( if needed )
5.
shock water
6.
add chlorine
7.
add algaecide
